A Parent’s Guide to some great Homework Tips to start the year off right
Tip#1 –Designate a study spot in your house
The kitchen or dining room table can work well for younger children who may need help completing assignments. Older children (Grades 4+) can likely work at a desk in their room or another quiet area of the house.
Tip #2 –Make a standing appointment with homework
Setting a daily fixed time for homework establishes a routine that eliminates daily arguments and debates. The scheduled time might not be the same every day but it would be the same every Monday, every Tuesday, etc.
Tip #3 –Unplug the TV and get rid of any other distractions
The sound and sight of the TV produces too much distraction. Some kids enjoy listening to music while they work. See what works best for your child.

Gather all homework supplies in one handy basket, box or plastic container. If you have everything all set to go, you’ll never waste time searching for needed supplies. Suggested items: pencils, pencil sharpener, erasers, crayons, pencil crayons, markers, glue stick, scotch tape, lined paper, stapler, safety scissors, ruler, dictionary, calculator.
Tip #5 –Supervise safe access to online resources
Children can benefit from accessing online information via a home computer, laptop or tablet. Ensure that you are well aware of the sites your child is visiting by keeping online use in common areas of your home.
Tip #6 –A full tummy thinks better than an empty one
Making time for a snack before homework will boost concentration.
Tip #7 –Fresh air does a brain good
Play and unwinding after school is an important part of the day. Fresh air is great to revive the neurons after a long day for both you and your child. Work in time at the park or walk the dog together before kicking off your homework session.
